Special Project: Portraits of Strangers

Street photography may be the highest art. In the best work, there is no artist--only talkers talking, dancers dancing, lovers loving. The artist selects and composes the scene, and then has the decency to get out of the way. He doesn't compose to show his cleverness; he doesn't overwrite; he doesn't lay out a tedious argument. His is a genius of feeling--he knows that by freezing movement, the viewer will see what he instinctively knows is there: a world at love. And what a worthy project--to show people that the paradise they long for is right in front of them.
